The Gift of not Taking Things Personally

Life is messy and we bump into each other constantly in a sea of miscommunication and charged up emotions. One sure way not to get overwhelmed by these crazy tidal waves is to just not take everything so personally. Instead of focusing on what is being said or done, place your attention on the fact that, whatever it is, it’s interesting that it’s happening at all. Treat the situation like a science experiment: How many people are yelling at this moment? How many people are looking away? Introspection will keep you out of the fight and perhaps give you some insight on how to help calm the situation down.

Here is one thing  you can do to calm your own seas even when there’s a storm brewing in the classroom: Repeat to yourself: “This child is a miracle just like all the children in the world.”
